Deacon Wives In Action:

Phoebe Ministry: A Pro-Life Ministry by Wives of Deacons to Mothers-in-need for the furnishing of diapers.

History: In 2002, four wives of Deacons decided to begin a pro-life program to furnish diapers to mothers in need. These 4 women....Barbara Shaunessy, Nancy Foster, Norine Howard and Agnes Forcucci spear-headed the entire program from the its beginning until the present. The Director of Deacon Formation at that time suggested using the name Phoebe Ministry in honor of a very charitable woman named by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans (16:1). Since that time, over 300 women have received diapers, most over an extended period of time.

In the beginning the wives and the deacons were the main source of donations. When news of the Ministry spread, donations began to come from other Catholic sources.

On-going Donations:  No one is refused no matter what the circumstances of the baby’s birth. The community of deacons and wives still maintain a flow of donations and although very helpful and necessary, these are not enough to meet the extensive needs.  Other sources of funds to purchase diapers have been: bake sales {some organized by older school children}, absentee baby showers, and giving talks to parish groups by committee members. The Committee has created a cookbook in which recipes were collected from the Diaconate community. All proceeds were donated to Phoebe.

These are  some examples of the creativity of this small but mighty and worthy charity. As good as all this is, we are still limited and at times have truly struggled since donations can be sporadic...times when the ‘bank is empty’. At these times we have to send out a plea, especially to the deacon community. And there have been some generous responses to these pleas. But the needs continue to come.

  • Over these years we have collected thousands of dollars and have given as many diapers!

  • Support continues sometimes for a lengthy period, as a child has to have appropriate sizes.

We have a strict accounting system and a separate bank account to insure that every penny goes to this worthy cause. We are a self-sustained, not-for-profit organization.

Continuing Ministry: In order to continue our ministry, we need extra help. Diapers are expensive.

Whatever you can do to provide support for these mothers and children would be greatly appreciated.

We believe that this simple gesture of caring is Christ made visible. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta says it well...”Kindness has converted more people than zeal, science or eloquence.”
